March 13, 2008, I gave in the town of Sevres a conference on the life and the suffering of the Christians of Orient. During this conference I run spoke about the not very enviable fate of the Christians of Iraq, since the foundation of this state. They were slaughtered in 1933 in Simmel.
In 1961, up to 1991, there was the destruction of 182 villages of Kurdistan, the deportation of the population. Today, let us announce the destruction of more than 30 churches in Baghdad and Mosul, the abduction of thousands of people, the persecution for the Christians which obliges them to take refuge in the countries bordering or Iraqi Kurdistan. All that could have been guaranteed if the Treaty of Sevres of 1920, which granted and guaranteed, in article 62, the political, religious and cultural rights to these Christians Assyrian-Chaldeans, had been applied. Alas the Allied betrayed them and deserted them. Let us see today the dramatic consequences of that situation.
