LES SYRIAQUES ET LA PHILOSOPHIE GRECQUE

Les Syriaques, parmi les peuples du Proche-Orient, furent les porteurs d’une riche culture. Ils s’intéressèrent aux sciences de leur temps, et plus particulièrement à la philosophie. Très tôt, les Syriaques apprécièrent l’héritage de l’Antiquité grecque. Ils se procurèrent, par l’intermédiaire d’Écoles, comme celles d’Édesse, de Nisibe, d’Arbil, de Séleucie-Ctésiphon, les œuvres de la logique aristotélicienne. Ils commencèrent à les enseigner. Entre le début du Vème et le VIIIème siècle, les Syriaques commencèrent à faire passer du grec au syriaque les textes logiques d’Aristote. s. Ces érudits furent les premiers à ouvrir la longue route de la traduction. Les Syriaques furent les initiateurs des Arabes. Ils servirent d’intermédiaires entre les cultures, grecque et arabe, dans les domaines de la philosophie, de la médecine, et des sciences. Les Syriaques ne se bornèrent pas à transmettre aux Arabes l’héritage scientifique et culturel grec. Ils l’approfondirent, le commentèrent, l’abrégèrent, l’enrichirent. Ils se révélèrent d’excellents copieurs, traducteurs, exégètes et critiques. Ils illustrèrent cependant l’unité profonde de la pensée humaine, en se vouant à l’interprétation d’Aristote. Les savants syriaques enrichirent la langue arabe, qui servit à transmettre, au monde arabe, puis à l’Occident latin, la philosophie et la science grecque. Les Syriaques furent établis comme un pont solide entre les deux rives de la Méditerranée. Ils devinrent, à leur époque, tour de lumière, à l’image de cette ziggourat que l’on gravissait en Mésopotamie pour se rapprocher du ciel, symbole ici de la conscience et du savoir. Aujourd’hui, leurs héritiers les Assyro-Chaldéens-Syriaques souhaitent une reconnaissance. Ils veulent que leur patrimoine soit mieux connu, protégé. Ephrem-Isa YOUSIF.      Role of Syriacs In the transmission of Greek philosophy to the Arabs

The Syriacs and Greek Philosophy The Syriacs, among others peoples of the Middle East, were the heirs of a rich culture. They were interested in the sciences of their time, especially in Philosophy. Early on, Syriacs appreciated the science of ancient Greece. They got, from schools, like those of Edessa, Nusaybin, Arbil, Seleucia-Ctesiphon, the works of Aristotelian logic. They began to teach it. Between the beginning of the Fifth and the Eighth century, Syriacs began to translate from Greek to Syriac texts the Logic of Aristotle. These scholars were the first to open the long road of translation. Syriacs were the pioneers, the initiators of the Arabs. They served as intermediaries between Greek and Arabic cultures, in the fields of philosophy, medicine, and science. Syriacs did not restrict themselves to transmit the Greek cultural and scientific heritage to the Arabs. They commented on it, annotated it. They proved excellent translators and critics. However, devoted to the interpretation of Aristotle ,they illustrated the profound unity of human thought. Syriac scholars enriched the Arabic language, which served to transmit to the Arab world, then the West Latin, Philosophy and Greek Science. Syriacs were established as a solid bridge between the two shores of the Mediterranean. They became, in their time, a luminous tower, like the ziggurat we ascended in Mesopotamia to approach the sky, a symbol of consciousness and knowledge.
